In a major tragedy, popular South Indian actress Soundarya and three others were killed in a plane crash today, 17th April 2004, at Jakkur, near Bangalore. Soundarya, who had recently joined the BJP, was travelling on a small private aircraft hired by the party for campaigning.

Soundarya was on her way to Karim Nagar in Andhra Pradesh to campaign for the BJP when the plane crashed. The four-seater aircraft, which took off from Jakkur aerodrome at 11.30 a. m., exploded midair at Arishinakunte within four minutes.

Soundarya's elder brother Amarnath Shetty (32) and a BJP leader Ramesh Kadam (35), who were travelling in the aircraft and the pilot John Philip were also killed in the crash.

Soundarya, a multi-lingual star, had won this year's "Swarna Kamal" award for her stellar performance in Dweepa Kannada film, which also won national award. The private aircraft belonged to Agni Aero sports, which was involved in cloud seeding undertaken by the Government last year. Soon after receiving information about the tragedy, State BJP President Mr. Ananth Kumar, who was at the Press Club to address a media conference, rushed to the spot of the crash.

Soundarya had also acted opposite megastar Amitabh Bachchan in "Suryavansham".

Naqvi condoles:
Expressing shock at the tragic deaths, BJP spokesman Mr. Mukthar Abbas Naqvi said in Delhi that though full details were not available, the aircraft Charlie 180 crashed within four minutes of take off.

Soundarya had married a software engineer Mr. Sridhar last year. She had acted in Dwarakish's "Apthamithra" Kannada film, now under production.

Soundarya: A beauty with dignity
Soundarya requires no prologue. To cut it short in a single sentence Soundarya was multi talented, more beautiful and very much established with her dignified roles. Sowmya, who later transformed as Soundarya was born on July 18 and hailed from Bangalore. She was brought up in the cinema environment, as her father Sathyanarayana was a producer, director and actor in the Kannada film industry.

It was while Soundarya was doing her first year MBBS course, one of her father's friends offered her a role for his Kannada film 'Gandharva,' which was released in 1992. Later, she made her Tamil debut with the film 'Ponnumani' starred opposite Tamil hero Kartik. However, the credit goes to Telugu industry for giving her great preferment and prominence. Even though her first Telugu venture was "Raithu Bharatham", it was the film "Manavaraali Pelli", which released in the year 1993 was said to be her debut.

She became popular with the film "Top Hero" with Balakrishna. Later, she came into limelight with the film "Hello Brother" in which she co -starred with Nagarjuna. In spite of her half - hearted entry into the film industry, she started loving her career after the film "Ammoru".

Soundarya had produced a film in her mother tongue Kannada, under Girish Kasaravalli's direction. The film "Dweepa" bagged her three State Awards - Best Actress, Best Film, and Best Cinematography. The film went through five international film festivals.

Soundarya was also working with Girish Kasaravalli for "Gruhabanga", a Kannada television serial. The actress tied the nuptial knot with her distant relative Mr. Sridhar, software professional, on April 27, 2003, at a resort on the outskirts of Bangalore.

Awards galore:
Nandi Best Actress Award - in 1994
Nandi Best Actress Award - for "Pavithra Bandham" in 1996.
Nandi Best Actress Award - 1998
47th Filmfare Best Actress award -for "Raja"
Kannada State Government's Best Actress Award - for "Dweepa".

Not beauty alone:
"It's not beauty alone which can take you places", Soundarya once said.
"Without positive and healthy criticism, there can be no growth or improvement in artistes. Cinema is never a single person's show. I honour personal and professional discipline", she had said.

Soundarya had acted in more than 90 films including "Ponnumani", "Padiyappa", "Thavasi", "Muthu Kaalai" etc. (Tamil), "Suryavansham" with Amitabh Bachchan (Hindi), Gandharva, Sri Renukamba, Vijayadashami (Kannada) etc.
