Interview with Dattanna by Kiran Kumar: Let Government Provide Funds, Not Govern Rangayana
Then how should the new Rangayanas be? The new Rangayanas should be independent. City's Rangayana is an autonomous institute. Let the government fund it but not rule it. Let the artistes have freedom to do their work. Don't disturb a repertory which has been doing commendable work by sending them to the new Rangayanas. It is a surprise how an agreement was reached on breaking Rangayana and splitting its artistes. Read On
A “Yogi” of a Different Kind – Sri M
Living among the Rishis in caves deep inside the Himalaya, visiting every Hindu holy place including Manasa Sarovar, he returns to the plains a transformed man. He finds his Guru in one Yogi Maheshwarnath Babaji, who transforms his consciousness totally. In matters spiritual it is usually the word “enlightened” that is used for a spiritually realized person, but here I have not found that word being used for Sri M. Wonder, if he has not yet taken that final step, quantum leap into “enlightenment” from which state of eternal bliss, God intoxication, there is no return. Read On

People: R. N. Kulkarni: A Crusader from City
It has become a cliché these days for government servants who retire from service to say, "Well, I may have retired, but not tired." That also means he is available for an extension of service or for another job. However, those who feel really tired and have retired from government service will tell you, "Well, enough is enough. I am really tired." And some really honest may well say, "I am sick of government service." To the latter category, I suppose, belongs the author of the book "Sin of National Conscience" R. N. Kulkarni, a resident of our Mysore city. Read On
Dr. Vasundhara Doreswamy the Danseuse
If the saying “there is always a woman behind a successful man”, is axiomatic, then conversely too, it must be true — “there is always a man behind every successful woman”. As I know, later, when Doreswamy passed away, my Tax Consultant and a benevolent friend, T. R. Harish, a relation of Vasundhara, stood by her to pursue her great art in the real Hindu tradition and culture. He is now the Managing Trustee of VPAC Trust and has indeed contributed no less to take Vasundhara to the present dizzy heights as a danseuse par excellence, Guru and Choreographer. Read On
Advocate M. A. Sampath Iyengar: Making life a celebration at 94
I asked my brother late Dr. K. B. Subbaiah to suggest a lawyer to draft the partnership deed. He mentioned the names of Sampath Iyengar and also H. Gangadhar (politician and later MLA). Though I had decided to go to Sampath Iyengar discounting Gangadhar who was famous as a criminal lawyer, I could not meet Sampath Iyengar as finally the partnership deed was drafted by our Chartered Accountant as per the wishes of my partners. Celebrity Speak: Sonu Sood, Riding High
Heard you refused to get “physical” with Amitabh Bachchan in “Budda Hoga Tera Baap”? I was very much there. Dabaang got noticed “well” and so did I. I was in films much before that and I'm sure people did notice me very well in Yuva, Jodha Akbar, Singh is King etc. With Dabaang, my role and the film clicked together! I have miles to go and I do agree the journey hasn't been very smooth. I was supposed to hit him hard in the very first scene. I've grown up idolizing him and couldn't bring myself to do something like that! But like a true actor, Mr. Bachchan said, "Forget all that. Come on. Push me hard," and I did and it showed. Read On

People: The Grand Old Man of Mysore
Just like a doctor, an advocate has a golden touch (hastaguna) and Sampath had it in plenty. Whenever he touched a brief that automatically saw success. Those were the days when everybody believed “Justice prevails”. Judges were afraid of the brilliant advocates. Once a rich man approached Sampath Iyengar and requested him to take up his case. He refused as it was not a just case. The rich man offered double the fees but he was not moved and told him that the case was a bundle of lies and hence he would not take it. The angry rich man, before going out, said "If this is your attitude, you will have to close down your office." The rich man is proved wrong by Sampath. Read On

People: Green Gandhian Sundarlal Bahuguna still fiery at 95!
Why did not the Chipko movement become popular in the rest of the country? As I always say, environmental activism is not about fame or money. It is all about dedication, devotion and determination. Where are such youth today? The desire to make a change should be deep-rooted. Green activism is about uprooting from urban life and staying among the people who are affected and sharing their difficulties. Read On
A Tribute: “Kailaasa Vaasa” – “Bheemasena”
Before the commencement of the concert, the artistes were felicitated by Gundu Rao. When it was the turn of Bhimsen Joshi, he got on to the stage in his usual attire of jubba and dhoti with an old shawl draped casually across his shoulders. As Gundu Rao was about to drape the new shawl after garlanding him, Bhimsen Joshi took off his own shawl and draped it across Gundu Rao's burly shoulders and then embraced him. A laughing Gundu Rao then draped the brand new shawl and spoke for a few minutes with the great singer. Read On

Kanaka Dasa was closely associated with Sri Krishna Mutt. Lord Krishna gave darshan to Kanaka Dasa here through a window when he was not allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum. Kanaka Dasa had offered Lord Krishna what he could afford. That was a half coconut shell full of Ganji. Vadiraja Swamy had ordered the first offering of all days to the Lord should be the same and it is being followed even now when Lord Krishna can afford even a golden plate. Read On

Interview with SP Rama Subba: Everyday, Everything is a Challenge
Among the cases that you handled, which is the most memorable one? Rama Subba recalled those milestones in his career and the list was a long one. He started with the investigation into robbery and dacoity cases, inter - State highway robbery near Challakere, where the robbers were from UP, house burglary cases in Mysore and Bangalore in 1992 where his team was successful in catching one of the gang members red - handed, and through him caught the whole gang; sandalwood cases in Shimoga, Eidgah Maidan issue in Hubli, election bandobust, disturbance between people of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over an actor's issue, Babri Masjid case and many more. K. M. Chengappa: Coorg Sauce for Pizzas in US
The American Calypso Pizza tastes tangier with a dash of tomato sauce bottled in a small industry in Kodagu. The pickled Jalapeno slices that spice up sandwiches, burgers, sausages and other such bland dishes in Canada and Australia, are also bottled in the same industry. The sweet, crisp and juicy pineapple and Alphonso mango slices are also processed and packaged (under the brand name of Mycem, Nectar Fresh) at the Coorg Food Products (CFP), a subsidiary of Kodagu District Orange Growers' Co - operative Society, located in Gonikoppa town, 100 kms from Mysore city. Interview with Kailash Kher: Searching for Kailasa in Kher
One last question, Kailash. You have sung for Kannada, Telugu and Tamil movies. You have even done cameo roles and then you have turned composer for films. So, where are you headed? Mujhe patha nahin. Sacch! I think this is a spiritual search. Did you know that deep down there is a spiritual quality to that Kannada song which I sang and which I am told is a hit… Hale paatre, Hale kabana… (Old vessel, old iron). Read On
People: Kumble Sundar Rao: Yakshagana artiste par excellence
Being a regular visitor to a hotel in his home town, one day a stranger approached him and asked him if he could render certain dialogues of a character in the Yakshagana play as the regular artiste suddenly took ill. That proved to be the turning point in Sundar Rao’s life. His first role of delivering dialogue (who is known as Bhagawata at the age of 19, was such an instant success that opportunities started pouring in and he never turned back again. Over the years he gradually gained mastery over all the other features of the play such as the Raga, Tala and Prasanga. Read On
Interview with Anant Nag: I am awaiting Moksha
JH was not what he was painted out to be. You yourself know that as you are associated with their family. He was the most understanding and broad - minded man who could go beyond the confines of ideology. He could see your point of view, even if he did not agree with you. I was an MLA, MLC and a Minister in JH's regime and I have no regrets. It is not my nature to speak ill, unfounded ill or otherwise, of another. Read On
Meet Mysore’s own Magician Raj Bhat
Why are not magicians playing an active role in exposing fake Godmen who still continue to fool people by pretending to materialise ash, Shivling, gold - rings and other objects? It’s not completely true that magician are not doing anything. Many, including me, educate children in schools after performing a magic show about how these fake Godmen are hoodwinking people using the very same tricks which they just saw. Of course, we cannot perform it in a big scale as some of the ingredients like chemicals used for the show are quite expensive, which we can’t afford to buy. Read On
Interview: Mayor dwells on his plans for Mysore’s development
What is your vision for Mysore? How do you hope to achieve this? My vision is to make Mysore a green and pothole - free city. In future, roads will be designed with a slight curvature at the centre so that rain water flows off at the sides and enters the drainage without stagnating on the road. I am thinking of handing over the maintenance of roads to contractors by making them sign a contract for a certain period. Money will be paid to them in installments. Half the amount will be paid as first installment; after successful maintenance, the next installment of 25% will be paid and the last installment will be paid at the end of contract period. The contractors will be held responsible for maintaining the roads. Read On

Kudpi Rajanikanth Shenoy: Car Street Bids Farewell to Taj Mahal Cafe
The most popular item served by Taj Mahal is the inimitable “Kaapi”, which used to be served as “Single”, “Special”, “Light Special” and “Adha Double”! I remember my late father telling us about Komal Vilas days, and the flavour of Thuppa Dosa, Avalakki Usli and Teek Rotti with Sheera or Halwa those days in the forties that used to come for less than One Mukkaal! The famous Wheat and Banana Halwa, Mithai Laadu, Saat, Mysore Pak, Jilebi and Thukdi are popular with households of Mangalore and undivided South Kanara District. These used to be freshly prepared daily at Car Street Taj Mahal. Sugar Coated Cashew nuts with plain Cardamom and Saffron flavours, are rare to find in Karnataka State. Read On
Kudpi Rajanikanth Shenoy: New Taj Mahal Cafe opens at new facility
New Taj Mahal Café in its new premises has promises to keep. Miles may look like inches for regular goers at the new facility. Slight increase in prices seems well justified, looking at the ambience and cleanliness. Parking area looks vast, compared to Car Street café. With little innovation, drive-in facility could be extended; we overheard couple of connoisseurs commenting as they got into their car. All said and done, The New Taj Mahal Café at Kodialbail is here to stay! Read On
“Jai Ho” Vijay Prakash goes down memory lane
"There are innumerable memories of Mysore that will remain evergreen in my mind. Mysore Palace, Chamundi Hill, St. Thomas School in which I studied, JSS College and many more. All are great places. Mysore Masale Dose, Masalapuri sold near Sterling Talkies, the solemnity of Chamundivana, the sweetness of Mysore Pak, and scores of other delicacies continue to captivate my thoughts. It is a heavenly feeling to ride a mobike and go round the city. I can never take away the city off my mind. No other activity is dearer to me than to savour the delicacies of my city. Oh! the hot and fresh Masale Dosa of Gayathri Tiffin Room in Chamundipuram ", he recalled. Read On

C. H. Vijayashankar: The people's MP
Vijayashankar is known to be a person who moves and mingles with the common man, on a day – to - day basis. If there is work, he will walk the distance rather than wait for the people to wait at his gate. This had happened when people voted other candidates from the constituency. Of course, people's memory is short and their preference can be influenced or vitiated by smart political operators by means fair or foul. Read On
Pramod Muthalik: Hero of Sorts
I had seen him in flesh and blood a couple of years ago in my office sitting in front of me. At this distance of time I do not remember what for he had come, but I do remember a few sparklers of our conversation. He identified himself as an RSS man working in North Karnataka but now distanced himself for whatever reason from both RSS and naturally BJP. However, he projected himself before me as a very strongly committed Hindutva man. I was really not much impressed by his personality nor the way he spoke. Read On

Animals are our Bread & Butter. Why should we ill – treat them?
Do you feel that the NGOs are right in saying that the animals are harassed? They want a natural environment for the animals. Is drinking milk natural? Is wearing clothes natural? They come to such drastic conclusions like elephants have to walk for eighteen hours in the jungle. What about Zoos? You can’t have double standards. Even temples should not have elephants then. Why target the circus only? Read On

He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street - sweeper who did his job well”. Mathoorji too firmly believes in the principle “If you do it, do it well”. It is said, you must first be a believer, if you want to be an achiever. Read On

Everyone, including common man, feels that 2008 Assembly election is going to be totally different. If you endorse this view, in what way is it different? Yes, it is really different all over the State so also in Chamaraja constituency. Considering that new DJs are born by the day, what is the “one thing” that is essential to keep a DJ competent and give an edge? “Read the crowd”. It is important to play what the crowd wants and not always what a DJ likes. I have a huge music collection and I spend thousands of pounds to keep myself updated on the latest happenings and to get new ideas. Animal electricity! “BovinEl” power stations for every street of rural India
The concept of generating BovinEl power is downright simple and is based on India’s age-old technology of animal – driven oil mills or oil presses (called “gaaNa,” “gaaNamu,” “gaaNi,” “kolhu,” “chekku,” etc., in different parts of India). The original, country – made oil mill consisted of a wooden mortar and a pestle. The mortar used to be fixed to the ground and the pestle, with oilseeds compressed under it, used to be rotated by one bullock or a pair attached to it by a yoke. The seeds would thus be crushed by the friction and pressure generated. Read On

You are retiring at 60, which is very young by today's norm. Why this early retirement? Yes it is, but I will retire. I believe in making room for the youth. We have to give other people a chance and more importantly a chance for the youngsters to show their skill and prove themselves. Look at our politicians, we have Ministers who are so old that they cannot even remember the last question asked, but then they still want to hold on to their seats instead of making way for new talent and youth. M. S. Sathyu tells Film Makers: Take criticisms sportively
What do you feel about the film industry of the '70s and now? These days, films are blindly made.
