About
60 kms from Mangalore is a fairly large and upcoming town
that was the "sanctum of Madhwacharya", the great Sanskrit
Philosopher. The famous temple here has a fascinating idol
of Lord Krishna that is richly adorned with jewels. The
main attraction of this temple is the "Kanakana Kindi"-
a small window through which Krishna is believed to have
given darshan to his ardent devotee, Kanakadasa.
Udupi
Shri Krishna Temple
Udupi
is famous for its Sri Krishna Mutt, which though small
is quite beautiful. There is no front door to this
mutt. Instead there is a window through which once
could always get the darshana of the idol from outside

The
Head Quarters of Udupi District is the town Udupi 60 kms
north of Mangalore. It is the seat of Dwaitha followers.
Madhwacharya the founder of the Dwaitha Siddhantha organized
the 8 mutts and installed-Paryaya method of ruling. The
Udupi town is called as the temple city. Shri Krishna temple
is the important among the temples. The place is also called
as "Rajatha Peeta". Renounced saints like Purandara Dasa,
Kanaka Dasa, and Chaithanya Maha Prabhu visited this temple.
The golden chariot and Madhwa Sarovara in the temple of
Shri Krishna adds to the fame of Udupi. The other temples
in the town are Anantha Shayan Temple built in 9th century
and Chandramouleshwara Temple of 12 A.D.
ANEGUDDE
VINAYAKA TEMPLE: Approximately 9 km from Kundapur, a
famous Anegudde Vinayaka temple stands on the rocky hills
at Kumbasi. It is one of the seven pilgrimages in the "Parashurama
Kshethra". There is another temple of Mahalingeshwara at
Kumbasi.
BARKUR:
It was a fort built during Vijayanagar Emperor Harihara's
regime. Now the ruins can be seen at the place. This place
is about 74 km from Mangalore. There are several temples
containing inscription on stones of historic values. Harihara
the emperor of Vijayanagar had kept his representatives
at this place. Later it became the traditional capital of
Jain kings called Ballals.
KARKALA:
Karkala is the taluk head quarters of Karkala Taluk
52 kms from Mangalore where on the hill of rocks, 300 ft
high a Monolithic statue carved from the Black Granite stone
of the place, standing on the hilltop. The hill is called
Gommata Betta. This form of Bahubali 41 ft 5 inches height
and weighing 80 tons of the last Thirthankara of the Jains.
There is a tank at the foot of this hill known as Ramasamudra.
A Single Pillar called Manasthamba and a temple called Ananthashayana
temple are situated here. In the Ananthashayana temple god
Shri Hari in the posture of Shri Ranga statue of human form,
sleeping over the Mahashesha is situated.
Apart
from this there is an ancient temple of Shrinivasa called
Venkataramana temple. In front of this temple A colossal
figure of Veera Hanuman of Shri Veeranjaneya carved, stands
on a single stone. The pillar inside the Venkataramana temple
is fully carved with stone bells and these bells are movable
and can be titled in different directions.
At Attur near Karkala, the Holy Church, of fame and pilgrimage
St. Lawrence is also situated.
KAUP:
It is a place where well-known lighthouse that guides
the navigators and warns the ships about the present of
rocks, is situated at about 11 km south of Udupi on the
national highway.
ST.
MARY'S ISLANDS: It is an island situated nearly 58 km
north of Mangalore and north of port Malpe. A place for
the Holiday goers. History says that Vasco da gama has touched
these Basalt rock isles in 1498 before reaching Calicut. Read

MARAVANTHE:
Along the seacoast nearly 9 km from Kundapur is an enchanting
place called Maravanthe. On its western side, the Arabian
Sea stretches with its grandeur of roaring waves, while
on the eastern side the Sauparnika River flows. In between
the Seacoast and the River bank passes the West coast highway
N.H. 17.
KOLLUR:
140 km from Mangalore, a pilgrim center, on the peak
of the hills of the Kodachadri is situated. The Goddess
Mookambika is said to be here in the form of Jyothirlinga,
the Adhi Shankaracharya consecrated Over the Shrichakra
the panchaloha image of the Goddess Mookambika.
VADAPANDESHWARA:
A beautiful sunset view one can have from this place. The
idol of Balarama, the brother of Shri Krishna was excavated
from the "Gopichandana" mud and installed here, at Vadapandeshwara
7 km west from Udupi on the seacoast by Madhwacharya.
MALPE:
The best natural port of Udupi district is Malpe and
it is 4 km west of Udupi. On this natural port, the commercial
activities are centered since ages. The oldest tile factory
of Basel Mission is still functioning here. Fishing and
Fish curing are the main industries. One can see thousands
of fishing boats anchored here. Most of the places in Karnataka
get the seafood from Malpe.
MANIPAL:
Manipal is situated about 5 kms from Udupi, a place founded
by Dr.T.M.A Pai former Finance Minister. The Manipal town
has come up on a Hilly place with multifarious activities
of Industry Commerce and Education. The Educational Institutions
of Manipal comprises of Engineering, Medical, Polytechnic,
Business and Hotel Management, which is also a Deemed University.
The
Syndicate Bank which is a now a nationalized bank was founded
by Dr.T.M.A Pai. The Head Office is based at the Manipal
House in Manipal. Also financial institutions like ICDS
Ltd, Manipal Finance Ltd and Maharashtra Apex, Lord Krishna
Bank begin their roots from Manipal.
The
Famous Manipal Hospital situated here founded again by Dr.T.M.A
Pai has the state of the Art Technology in treating patients
who come from all over the country.
